Transforming Rural Sexual and Reproductive Health with AI-Assisted Tele-Ultrasound
- Sustainable Development Goal :5 - Gender Equality
- Gender Equality Marker :Gender Responsive (GEM 2)
- Testing Country :Colombia
- Testing Period :10 months
- Amount :$173,414
This testing project is targeting women, girls and gender diverse people in remote and underserved areas of Colombia along the migrant corridor (Santander, Norte de Santander and Valle del Cauca). To respond to the unmet need for sexual and reproductive health including safe abortion, a model of financially sustainable AI-assisted telemedicine with ultrasound diagnostics (“tele-ultrasound”) is being tested.
There are health days within each target community, hosted by Fundación Unimédicos.
This includes real-time consultations and ultrasound imaging facilitated by nurses and health workers via telemedicine, enabling immediate assessments.
Nurses are also trained to operate the equipment and use the telemedicine platform. AI is streamlining administrative tasks such as scheduling and data collection, reducing costs and errors. Financial viability is being tested through a cross-subsidization model developed with Fòs Feminista’s Lab.
